For those who are unaware to know that the Kerala family titles are often derived from the environmental and social background. Hence the Kakkanattu family received another family name ‘Peechattu’ because Kurien, the elder son of Mathulla, bought a plot (land) from Peechattu Chetty, East Kothamangalam (Kozhippilly), for settlement. He was married to Mariam Parankimalil. Their descendants spread out to Kun-nappilly, Kurickamolel, Palackudi, Udukudi and Kodakanal upholding the tribe, ‘Peechattu’ along with the original family name, Kakkanattu. Presently the Peechattu families live at East Kothamangalam (Ay-yankavu), Nellimattam, Kavalangadu and Oonnukal. The Chettiyars in general were well established smart and eloquent business class. It is to be noted that the Kakkanadans outsmarted them by purchasing their land. Kakkanattu Kurien and Mariyam were blessed with five sons. Mathai, the eldest son, after his marriage left the Peechattu premises and settled on the land he bought from palakkudy Nair family that lived across the Kothamangalam river. Naturally the people around referred to them as Palakkudy Family. Varkey, Kurien’s second son made his home at Udukkudiyil (property bought from a nair), Ouseph, the third son, set his dwelling at Koda-kanal, Thoma, the fourth son had no male child and Peechattu, the Benjamin of the family stayed in the ancestral home. Transportation across the Kothamangalam River was carried out using the Kakkanattu family rowing boat (Vallam- a small boat manually operated by rowing or peddling). Later when a bridge was built, the family preserved the oar as a souvenir at Palakudi ancestral home. Mathai Palakkudi had six children – four sons and two daughters. Kurien (Kunnappilly), Thomman (Kureeckamolel), Ulahannan (Pa-lakkudi – Kozhippilly) and Varkey (Palakudy – Nellimattam) were the four sons who settled at different places as given in bracket or received alternate family names. The daughters – Ehli was given in marriage to Peringazha, Moolamattam family and Brajeetha had marriage alliance with Thekkekkara family, Kothamangalam. At that time, the Landlords at Nellimattam were selling away their land at a cheaper rate and the Kakkanadans conveniently utilized the oppor-tunity. In addition to that they encroached large areas of fertile land available in the vicinity. Agriculture being the main stay of the people, the family, in fact, took into its possession enough land holdings for all the sons of Palakudi Mathai at Nellimattam for homing. The Peechattu Family members also could take the benefit in course of time by inherit-ing their share of land as well.
