Mathan, the youngest son of mathula Kora, had migrated to Changa-nassery. He had acquired 1000 acres of land at Kadamankulam, includ-ing paddy fields. The village officer (Pravarthyar), under the king of erstwhilw state of Travancore, harassed the latter imposing tax, practi-cally for all household edible items and cash crops. They were asked to pay breast tax too. (Women of the lower caste were not allowed to cover their breasts. If they wanted to do so, they had to pay tax for it.) Mathan and Pravarthyar had heated the argument that ended up in the loss of their lives. Thus being compelled by the dangerous situation, Mathan’s wiferun away in the night along with their two sons and one daughter to Southern Travancore that was under the another King.
